We have exciting news! PropagationNation welcomes Shira Brewer as our very first executive director! She officially began on September 15, 2025. 

Since its founding, PropagationNation has grown exponentially in terms of trees planted and community engagement. As executive director, Shira will partner with our passionate staff and board to navigate our growth and increase the presence of Coast Redwoods and Giant Sequoias in the Pacific Northwest to support environmental and economic sustainability.

 

 

 

 

About Shira

Shira brings energy and enthusiasm to PropagationNation. She began volunteering with us in March of 2024 and soon became an integral part of our team. At her first tree potting party, Shira “felt at peace” handling the trees that will go on to capture lifetimes worth of carbon emissions. Since then, she has led tall tree tours, engaged in outreach efforts, and developed strong connections with PropagationNation team members and supporters.

 

After teaching middle and high school math for over 15 years in Seattle and abroad, Shira is stepping out of the classroom and into this executive director role, where she is excited to work with beautiful people and trees to support our climate. 

 

In an interview about her upcoming role, she expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with partner organizations, expanding our volunteer and donor base, and educating people of all ages about why these trees are right for the Pacific Northwest. Looking forward, one specific goal Shira wants to see become a reality is “PropagationNation owning several acres of forest where we grow Coast Redwoods and Giant Sequoias. People who don’t have regular access to the trees will be able to come to learn about them and can plant one on the land and watch it grow over time.”  

 

A Transition:

 

PropagationNation founder Philip Stielstra has led the organization with enormous passion and focus since 2019. Philip will still be involved in leadership within the organization, but he will now take on a more defined role as president of the board. 

 

In reflecting on this shift, which he initiated, Philip said “I’m so excited to have a partner to lead PropagationNation. It’s been so fun leading it, but it also is too much for one person now.”

 

About Shira, he said, “She is taking on this position like she was meant to do this – fearless, bold, ready to accept challenges, and just so attuned to the people she’s working with. It’s just going to be a real pleasure to work with her.”
